I've found that, whatever mood I'm in, I'm more active in Photoshop during hours of darkness.

Torchweek! I enjoyed that. The previous seasons were a mixed bag, but Children of Earth, for me, was an emotionally charged story with a higher body count than any drama, and some allusions to the Holocaust. A nihilistic clusterfuck. Now - I give credit to Uncle Rusty, Moran and Fay, but is it wrong that I laughed out loud when the 456 revealed their intentions with the kids?

Saturday I went and saw Bruno, which in parts was really funny on top of a narrative I was *eh* cool with. In others, it was horrifying. There are images in that film that will scar you for life. I shouted NO! NO! at the spiritualist scene.

Last Thursday, because I was bored and didn't want to be stuck at home with my sister being sick from a mild form of fwine slu, I saw Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. All it is is robot porn, sandwiched by awkward comedic moments and an overlong fight scene in the third act. In a way it educated me: it was a prime (sorry) example of how not to make a movie. Sure it had spectacle, and giant freaking robots are always cool, but such redeeming qualities can't save a weak script riddled with holes (unsurprisingly it was a product of the Writer's Strike). It actually makes the plot of the first film more plausible.

Next, Half-Blood Prince! I'm re-reading the book so it's fresh in my mind and I can nitpick the hell out of it.

Goodbye Michael. Thank you for entertaining my childhood, and for helping me get through my second year semester. I'm gutted I never got to see you live, and I'm saddened for those who missed out on seeing you for the last time. Peace.

Alright, on to a few lighter subjects. I saw a couple of films recently:

Public Enemies
A raw and tense filmmaker's film, this has both realism and an old-school kind of feel, even if it looks like it was shot with a handycam. The gunfights/chases, the performances (although there may have been a few boom mic issues), the design and a bit of sly humour make this otherwise confusing thriller a joy to watch.

Ice Age 3: Shaun of the Dinosaurs
Although the 3D didn't blow me away, the animation was great (especially Buck), there were some inspired and exciting setpieces, and it was nice to revisit the saga once again. And as you all know, everything's better with dinosaurs and Pegg.

My sister and I both got proceeds, meaning we might - sorry, will - graduate this time next year!

A pop culture icon and an incredibly talented (albeit strange) musician. That's a fact.
Condolences to his family, children, friends and fans. And those who bought those tickets off ebay.
I still can't get over it quite frankly. He never had that chance to say a proper goodbye. It really sucks.

21 June 2009 @ 09:09 pm
Well, there was me thinking a trip to Wales was uncertain. Apart from all the respiratory equipment, oxygen pumps and pipes in demand 24/7, Bampa's plodding along, though a tad testy. I really hope to see him again in September.

The most exciting thing that happened on our way to Port Talbot was we were delayed by a Take That concert at the Millennium Stadium.

This week in June wasn't exactly beach weather, so we shopped around Swansea and Cardiff. I bought a couple of blu-rays, bags, and The Highway Code - the holy bible for drivers. That's right. The time has come. I feel the need to make my own journeys; Dad is considering a Ford Fiesta as a graduation gift. If a tiny old Indian lady can steer a wheel and check blind spots, why can't I? I just have to re-read the book, take in the terminology for the Theory/Hazard tests, check my eyeballs are healthy enough to read a licence plate at twenty and a half metres, and, if I can afford enough to pass the first time, prepare for those Practicals.

Anyway, Debenhams was running a sale where luggage carriers had 70% off them, and there was a suitcase Mum really wanted, until some biatch got her hands on it. Mum showed me a 70 litre suitcase, when a woman turned round and said "Excuse me, I'm intending to buy that." In the end Mum bought a 36 litre.

The Up Close exhibition has been revamped since I last visited, with props/costumes notably from Series 4 and The Next Doctor, a green screen thing and other special effects. There's a window by the entrance which I think was placed to keep lines of fans amused: http://twitpic.com/80zhi

The food in Salt is always great. I had a Cheese and Bacon burger with chips; also tried a bit of chorizo sausage, loved it, so I'm ready for a proper pasta dish.

One thing I like about cross country coach rides is watching cloud formations. Here it looks like God is giving us the a-ok: http://twitpic.com/811x4
